Meet your new best friend tomorrow!

Come to PetSmart tomorrow, 11/14, to meet adoptable dogs from Orange County Animal Shelter!
For the past two years, I have volunteered for the Orange County Animal Shelter through UNC’s Helping Paws group. I do Outreach, which is when we take a few dogs from the shelter into the public to socialize, exercise, and meet potential adopters. It’s a great opportunity for the dogs to get out, experience the world, and show off outside the shelter environment. As a volunteer, Outreach events are incredibly rewarding and fun; we get to educate the public about the shelter, play with the most appreciative dogs, and almost always find at least one new home! Both photos in this post are from recent Outreach events.

Chapel Hill Dog Swim

The Chapel Hill Community Center pool catered to a different group of guests during the 5th annual Chapel Hill Dog Swim on Sept. 13. For a $3 donation, dogs and their owners were free to roam the pool and outdoor patio area, eat tasty treats for humans and dogs, and play with tons of toys. I was there as an Orange County Animal Services volunteer and unofficial photographer. The event was an amazing success, attracting more dogs than ever before and raising funds for OCAS and the Community Center. My favorite part was watching the dogs figure out how to get in and out of the pool…some were definitely more graceful than others!

My friend Johnny brought his new schnauzer/poodle/terrier mix, Dexter “Dex” King Jones, for one of his first swimming experiences. Lets just say Dex was not a fan of the pool.

Most of the dogs would run up to the edge and then skid to a stop just before hitting the water. A couple (like that lab above) looked like pros, leaping off the edge to chase balls and frisbees.
Bella, the beautiful Airedale Terrier.
Airedales are one of my favorite breeds. I think it’s because they’re so unique looking and so rarely seen. Bella was a sweetheart and quite smart!

I think this is what a dog would call "bliss."
For anyone concerned about sanitation in the Community Center pool, don’t worry! They scheduled the dog swim right before their regular cleaning, so they drained and scoured the pool the next day before reopening it to the public.
Be sure to come on out to next year’s dog swim!

First, the site looks AMAZING! I may have to steal a few mins for a walk-through of how to set-up my own. Second, the lead photo made me blush…seing a black man blush is quite a site!
